St. Stephen’s Child Development Center (SSCDC) is a private, non-profit community preschool established to serve both you and your child year-round. We welcome families of all faiths and cultural backgrounds. Your child is entering an exciting time of growth and discovery. SSCDC provides developmentally appropriate individualized curriculum, teaching to each child’s learning style.
SSCDC offers teacher-directed and emergent child-centered activities through play and discovery. Our teachers are trained observers who teach to each child’s individual needs and interests. Our small class sizes, 1:6 teacher-child ratio, provide for a nurturing environment while building a solid academic foundation that is well-rounded and fosters love for learning.
Visit us in Santa Cruz by calling for a private tour appointment. Tours are scheduled 11:15a.m., however alternate times can be requested. We look forward to meeting you!
SSCDC welcomes in the 2021/2022 new school year. We reopened August 3, 2020. Community Care Licensing (CCL) has directed us to follow the most stringent guidelines. The guidelines and policy for CCL come from California Department of Social Services (CDSS), who email updated Provider Information Notices (PIN) frequently. California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is advised by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). California Department of Industrial Relations Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA), and local health department guidance or health orders are to be followed. Licensees and providers should follow the strictest requirements. Additionally, SSCDC Director, Kathy Berens has attended weekly meetings along with State Preschool and Private Directors, with the Child Development Resource Center (CDRC), Santa Cruz Office of Education (COE), including Dr. Farris Sabbah County Superintendent of Public Schools who advises us. The Director, Kathy, has attended from March 2020 and continues attending weekly meetings for advisory purposes for congruent policy between Preschools and Santa Cruz City Schools.
Although we are following the guidelines, we provide a natural preschool environment for the children to play, learn, and explore. The children wear masks, but do not social distance unless eating (However we have created more space for movement in play, and Circletime) in which they are properly spaced and get a mask break. We work with, rather than forcing the 2 year old children to wear masks. We wash our hands often and keep the environment clean and sanitized. They each have their own cot and barriers in the resting room. Our students enjoy being at school and do not complain about the Covid-19 guidelines. The parents tell us that they feel safe bringing their children here during these challenging times.
